I had already decided that I didn't want some major aquarium thing going on, no electrical cords, no stand...just a low maintenance fish in a bowl that Mikah and Jett could watch swim around. So I ask the 'fish guy' how long a gold fish will live in a bowl, he tells me about 4 days. Um, I don't know which would be worse, the hassle of replacing a fish that often or explaining to Mikah on a weekly basis about 'Goldie going to heaven'. So, a gold fish wouldn't do... we bought a beta, which can live forever in just a bowl. I thought beta fish had to be alone but the fish guy tells us the females get on fine, it is when you add the male that they get aggressive (imagine that). So here we go, two female beta's and all that they entail and we head home. Once home we set up the fish, give them their names, Rubie and Prettygirl Blue and hang out watching them for a while.
Later that evening as Mike is taking Mikah to bed they stop and watch the fish some more. Mike says "I don't know about these two getting along?" I go over and check it out and sure enough there is Prettygirl Blue terrorizing Rubie. We watch for a while to make sure they aren't just being playful but it is clear, poor Rubie is coward at the side of the bowl and Prettygirl Blue is truly terrorizing her. So I scoop Rubie out and decide to put her at the bottom of the flower vase. Now mind you, I had the stems of the flowers cut very short so she had a good 3 inches from the bottom of the vase to the bottom of the flowers to swim around. Mike said, "she might not be able to breath with the flowers in there". I say, "sure she will, air is getting around those flowers".
In the middle of the night Mikah wakes up so Mike and I go deal with that and he decides to stay in bed with her for a while. As I go back to bed I stop to check on the new members of our fam. Prettygirl Blue is fine, then I go to Rubie. The rocks I bought for the bowls weren't gravel they are more like nickle size pebbles, so I look in the vase and think 'aah, isn't that cute, Rubie is asleep with her nose nuzzled between two pebbles', I tap on the vase, nothin'. Again, 'aah, Rubie is a sound little sleeper', again I tap and Lil' Rubie floats over on her side. UGH! When Mike gets back in bed later I tell him "I killed Rubie", he says, trying to go back to sleep and his eyes closed, "yeah, I noticed". I say "I guess I suffocated her", he says, eyes still closed, "I told you". I hated seeing Mike so broken up about it, LOL, but was even more worried about what I was going to tell Mikah in the morning. Luckily, all went well and we are the happy owners to one feisty little beta fish, Prettygirl Blue.
Rest in peace sweet Rubie.
